Eco Button Power Saving Device

“Energy Efficiency”, “Carbon Footprint”, “Green”, “Eco Friendly”. You’re probably just as confused by the new ‘save the planet’ jargon as the rest of us. But while the world cooks itself and world leaders have their fingers poised over the big red button that promises to destroy humanity, you can do something simple to help save the world.
Eco ButtonNo, it doesn’t involve squeezing into some colourful spandex that would make Mr Motivator drool, nor does it involve turning off all your lights and living in perpetual darkness in a hope to save electricity. Let us introduce to you; The Eco Button.
This little button sits quietly on your desk, powered by the USB port it illuminates (as gentle reminder for you to press it). When nature calls, or you want to go make a cuppa, simply click the ecobutton and your computer will switch to an eco mode which will run your monitor and hard drives on a measly 1.8 watts of power, far less than your regular computer standby mode.
Once you’ve woken the computer up again with the touch of any button, the Eco Button software will show you exactly how much CO2 you’ve saved, as well as how much money you’ve shaved off your leccy bill. It keeps a tally too so that you can see how much money you’ve saved since installing the button.
This little button is a brilliant and easy way of saving money and will make you feel like a bit of a superhero as you save the world one click at a time!

H&M Fashion Against AIDS campaign at the Isle of Wight festival 2010

We have been asked to supply 3 of our funky 3 step coffee tables for the H&M tent at the Isle of Wight 2010 festival!! This is H&M's third Fashion Against AIDS campaign, which includes the first festival collection, with 25% of the sales donated to youth HIV/AIDS awareness projects. “For me, festivals are unique and inspirational places as they join both music and fashion. To see your favourite bands, to see creative people gathered, all from different nations and with different looks really inspires me. It is very important to make people aware of the problem with AIDS and HIV and we want to contribute in the fight against the disease by donating some of the sales from this collection,” says Ann-Sofie Johansson, H&M’s head of design.
We at The Cool Wood Company believe this is a great cause and are delighted to be involved. Please follow the links below for more information on the Isle of Wight Festival 2010 and the amazing H&M campaign Fashion Against AIDS.

Volunteering for The Woodland Trust

We at The Cool Wood Company help support The Woodland Trust by donating £5  for every bed we sell, in addition to this we have also set up a trust fund which enables our customers or anyone for that matter to donate as much or as little as they want to help support The Woodland Trust, however some people prefer to offer their time and The Woodland Trust are currently looking for volunteers to help out.

Volunteers do many things across the whole of the Woodland Trust. Most of the tasks are not location specific and there are many that only require your time for a limited period, so you should be able to find something that suits you. As an environmental organisation they work remotely with the majority of their staff and volunteers, using email and phone as much as possible so it is likely that you will need to be comfortable working independently.

Find out more detail about the types of tasks our volunteers are involved with by clicking on the link below. If there is nothing suitable currently available please keep checking back here or set your preferences on the home page so you can see the latest opportunities on your own personal home page.

An Eco Escape in beautiful Argyle

The Cool Wood Company had the pleasure of delivering an Ethos Bed to the stunning Ecopod boutique retreat situated in glorious Argyle overlooking Loch Linnhe complete with its very own Castle! The Ecopod is a new venture headed by Jim and Nicola who have an eye for detail, design and are environmentally conscientious. They describe their Ecopod as being “light-filled, open plan and chilled out space which commands sweeping views of Loch Linnhe, the mountains of Mull and the Kingairloch coastline. A therapeutic pleasure in itself without even taking into account the luxurious interior of the pods which  combines classic soft furnishings, high-end audio-visual equipment and an array of locally-sourced produce and toiletries. All this with the environment firmly on our conscience:

  • Our geodesic structure leaves no permanent footprint on the land.
  • The erection of a dome typically uses a small fraction of the carbon required to construct a conventional building.
  • The geodesic dome shape is conducive to maximum heat retention through its convectional properties, therefore minimising the requirement for additional heat.
  • All wood used is FSC-accredited from sustainable local forests.
  • All our appliances have been carefully selected so that power usage is kept to an absolute minimum.
  • High-efficiency wood pellet biomass stoves are used to heat the pods.
  • A tankless instantaneous hot water supply ensures maximum efficiency with no wastage whatsoever.
  • All furniture has been selected as recycled classic pieces or hand-crafted from renewable sources.

So 5 Star isn't a guilty pleasure. Rest assured that Ecopod doesn't cost the earth.”

The Ecopod will be available to book from May onwards and The Cool Wood Company heartily  recommends you check out their website for full details and stunning imagery!

One For One Movement - A Pair Of New Shoes Is Given To A Child In Need With Every Pair Purchased - TOMS.com

When we heard about this initiative, we couldn't wait to share it with you! Such a simple idea, yet so effective and rewarding. The idea is simple, for every pair of  TOMS shoes purchased a new pair of shoes is given to a child in need. Why shoes you may ask? Well according to the good folk at TOMS, "many children in developing countries grow up barefoot. Whether at play, doing chores or going to school, these children are at risk:
  • A leading cause of disease in developing countries is soil-transmitted diseases, which can penetrate the skin through bare feet. Wearing shoes can help prevent these diseases, and the long-term physical and cognitive harm they cause.
  • Wearing shoes also prevents feet from getting cuts and sores. Not only are these injuries painful, they also are dangerous when wounds become infected.
  • Many times children can't attend school barefoot because shoes are a required part of their uniform. If they don't have shoes, they don't go to school. If they don't receive an education, they don't have the opportunity to realize their potential."
What struck us most about this was the passion clearly displayed by the amazing people behind TOMS, and  the commitment to make this happen. Please have a look at their website, read about their story and learn more about this initiative and even get involved yourself

The Cool Wood Company trust fund

We at The Cool Wood Company are commited to supporting the future of Britains woodlands and pledge to donate £5 to The Woodland Trust every time a bed is sold! Take a look at our fundraising page and even donate to the fund if you'd like. Even the smallest amounts can make a big difference.

Tree Appeal

The Cool Wood Company ensures each piece of timber used is ethically sourced and trees are regularly planted by us to help guarantee the future of Britain's woodlands.

Why not get involved yourself?

Carbon Footprint has teamed up with Tree Appeal enabling you to "Pledge a Tree" that will be planted and grown in the area of your choice!

Tree Appeal uses the local knowledge and expertise of tree planting partners to ensure the right trees are planted in the appropriate places. All trees are planted in reserves and managed woodland were they will live their natural lifespan and meet their biodiversity targets.

Each tree planted "offsets" your environmental impact by "breathing" in about 1 tonne of CO2 emissions over its lifetime. It's estimated that the average person needs to save about 7 tonnes of CO2 per year. So planting just 7 trees each year is one strategy for achieving this. The trees also provide sustainable habitat for wildlife and will enhance the natural landscape with native broad-leaved trees.

This is a great opportunity to support our woodland's and help guarantee their future for other generations. You will also receive a personalised certificate - this makes for a unique gift!
